In a major stride for the future of naval innovation, Robosys Automation and the University of Plymouth have announced a groundbreaking collaboration to supply an advanced Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) to the Royal Navy.
The cutting-edge USV will integrate Robosys’ state-of-the-art Voyager AI autonomy platform with world-class research and engineering expertise from the University of Plymouth, marking a new chapter in the UK’s drive toward autonomous maritime operations.
Navy-Grade Innovation, Academically Engineered
The USV, designed for high-endurance, multi-mission use, will support the Royal Navy in various applications, including maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, environmental monitoring, and operational support in contested or hazardous zones.
“This partnership represents a bold leap forward in delivering smart, scalable, and sovereign autonomous capabilities for the UK’s maritime defense sector,” said Nigel Lee, Chief Commercial Officer at Robosys.
“We are proud to be contributing to the Royal Navy’s autonomous transformation through applied research, innovation, and next-generation training,” added Professor Kevin Jones, Executive Dean of Science and Engineering at the University of Plymouth.
A Strategic Win for UK Maritime Tech
The collaboration reinforces the UK’s growing reputation as a leader in marine autonomy and defense innovation. It also exemplifies the growing synergy between academia and industry in accelerating defense capabilities without compromising safety, sovereignty, or sustainability.
The vessel will feature:
- Full COLREG-compliant autonomous navigation
- Real-time data processing and AI-assisted mission planning
- Remote monitoring and control via secure naval-grade networks
- Modular payload capability for rapid role-switching
From Lab to Fleet
Following extensive sea trials in the Southwest, the USV will enter operational testing with the Royal Navy’s autonomy and innovation units later this year.
This move aligns with the Navy’s broader push under its Maritime Autonomous Programme (MAP) to field intelligent, uncrewed platforms across surface, subsurface, and aerial domains.
