Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Eastern Seaboard as High Tides Threaten Low-Lying Areas

coastal flood advisory

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for several East Coast states as unusually high tides combined with strong onshore winds are causing minor to moderate flooding in vulnerable shoreline communities.

The advisory, which covers parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas, will remain in effect through Wednesday morning, with potential for extension depending on tide cycles and wind patterns.

🌧️ What’s Happening?

According to meteorologists, a combination of full moon tidal effects and lingering swells from Hurricane Erin offshore are creating dangerously elevated sea levels during high tide. Floodwaters are already encroaching onto coastal roads, piers, and beachfront neighborhoods.

“We’re seeing water levels about 1 to 2.5 feet above normal, especially during the afternoon and evening tide cycles,” said the NWS Mid-Atlantic Office. “Minor coastal flooding is expected, but some low-lying areas could see road closures and property impact.”

🛑 Areas Under Watch:

The following regions are under the Coastal Flood Advisory:

  • 🛟 Atlantic City, NJ
  • 🌊 Rehoboth Beach, DE
  • 🚧 Norfolk & Virginia Beach, VA
  • 🏖️ Myrtle Beach, SC
  • 🌪️ Outer Banks, NC

Local emergency management teams are monitoring tide levels and urging residents to:

  • Avoid driving through flooded streets
  • Move vehicles to higher ground
  • Follow evacuation advisories if issued

⚠️ What’s at Risk?

While no widespread evacuations have been ordered, low-lying neighborhoods, coastal parks, and small marinas could experience water intrusion, especially during peak tide hours between 7 PM and 10 PM tonight.

“It doesn’t take much for the ocean to spill over in places like the Outer Banks or Chesapeake Bay,” said coastal hydrologist Dr. Emily Rhodes. “Even a foot of saltwater on roads can be hazardous.”
