The Monsoon Session of Parliament descended into absolute mayhem on Tuesday as Opposition MPs tore and flung copies of the Constitution in the Lok Sabha, prompting an uproar that halted proceedings and led to the suspension of multiple members.

The protest erupted during a fiery exchange over the controversial Constitution (Amendment) Bill, with opposition members alleging that the ruling government was attempting to undermine core democratic values. The dramatic act of tearing and throwing pages of the Constitution was described by the Speaker as an “unforgivable insult” to Indian democracy.

“You are not protesting a bill, you are insulting the very soul of this nation,” said Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who adjourned the House amid chanting, slogans, and scuffles across benches.

The MPs involved claimed their actions were symbolic, representing what they called the government’s “systematic destruction” of constitutional freedoms. However, ruling party leaders have condemned the act as a “blatant show of disrespect” and are demanding strict disciplinary action.

Multiple members could now face long-term suspension, and a special parliamentary ethics panel has been tasked with reviewing the incident.
