AMTRAK Trump Extends Control Over Washington by Taking Management of Union Station Away from Amtrak

AMTRAK

AMTRAK Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the federal government will take over management of Washington, D.C.’s Union Station from Amtrak during the launch of the new Acela train.

Duffy said the station “has fallen into disrepair” and should instead be a point of pride for the nation’s capital.

The Department of Transportation has outlined plans for about $170 million in upgrades, including a new roof, improved restrooms, and aesthetic improvements to modernize the hub.

The decision is part of the Trump administration’s wider efforts to exert more control in Washington, which have also included deploying National Guard troops and federal agents in response to crime and safety concerns.
