Why This Time Slot?
Officials say the two-hour window helps limit the spike in particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10) that typically follows widespread cracker bursts at night. The measure is also aligned with the Supreme Court’s effort to regulate cracker use in sensitive regions.
While the Supreme Court’s directives legally bind NCR areas, Karnataka is voluntarily adopting a similar approach to preempt health hazards.
Green Cracker Obligation
Only environmentally safer “green” firecrackers — those designed with lower emissions — will be permitted. Non-green fireworks, particularly those containing heavy-metal compounds, are explicitly banned.
The KSPCB has instructed all districts to launch intensive crackdowns on illegal storage and sale. Authorities will monitor licensed traders to prevent misuse or violations.
Public Cooperation & Awareness
The state government is concurrently running awareness campaigns urging citizens to respect the time restriction and choose green crackers. Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre stated that compliance is essential to safeguard public health and reduce pollution.
With lesser pollution levels anticipated during this time, authorities hope fewer cases of respiratory ailments will arise around the festive period.
Challenges & Reaction
Despite the stricter rules, enforcement remains a challenge. Some traders may attempt to operate outside permitted hours or sell banned crackers covertly.
In Bengaluru specifically, the low demand for licensed stalls suggests a reliance on cross-border purchases from Hosur, which may complicate monitoring efforts.
Citizens are advised to adhere to regulations: bursting crackers only during the allowed hours and using only green-certified ones. Violations could lead to confiscation and penalties.
