Danielle Spencer, beloved for her iconic role as Dee Thomas in the hit 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, has passed away at the age of 60. Her death marks the end of a remarkable life filled with resilience, compassion, and courage.
Spencer had long battled health issues with unshakable strength. In 2014, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and bravely underwent a double mastectomy. Just four years later, in 2018, she underwent emergency brain surgery to prevent a cerebral hemorrhage. These serious health battles led supporters to launch a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her rising medical costs.
Her passing was confirmed by co-star Haywood Nelson, who remembered her with a touching tribute: “We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, What’s Happening!! cast member, veterinarian, animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine. Danielle is loved. She will be missed in this form and forever embraced.” He added, “She suffered for a very long time but did it with a great deal of courage.”
Born on June 24, 1965, Spencer rose to fame as a child actor with her sharp wit and unforgettable one-liners as the sassy younger sister on What’s Happening!!. She later reprised her role in the sequel series What’s Happening Now!!
Tragedy struck early in her career when she was involved in a devastating car crash that left her in a coma for weeks and claimed the life of her stepfather. The accident caused long-term spinal issues that she dealt with for much of her life.
Despite these challenges, Spencer never gave up. She turned her passion for animals into a successful career, becoming a licensed veterinarian. Her deep love for animals and advocacy for their welfare won her praise far beyond Hollywood. She even portrayed veterinarians on screen, blending her two life passions—acting and healing.
In 2011, Spencer shared her journey in her memoir, Through the Fire: Journal of a Child Star, giving fans a glimpse into her personal struggles and triumphs.
She passed away surrounded by her family, including her mother and her brother, jazz musician Jeremy Pelt.
