In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through Delhi’s political landscape, BJP leader and Delhi’s Chief Minister candidate Rekha Gupta was reportedly slapped during a public hearing held at a local community center on Tuesday afternoon.
The assault took place while Gupta was addressing citizens’ grievances, a routine part of her campaign outreach. Eyewitnesses say that a man in the crowd suddenly approached her and slapped her before security personnel intervened and restrained the accused. The man was immediately taken into custody by Delhi Police.
Delhi Police have confirmed the arrest of the assailant, identified as 38-year-old Rajesh Kumar, who has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for assault. Investigations are underway to determine the motive behind the attack.
Speaking to the press shortly after the incident, Rekha Gupta remained composed, stating, “Such acts of violence are unacceptable in a democratic society. I am here to listen to people and serve them, and I will not be deterred by such cowardly behavior.”
Delhi BJP leaders condemned the attack strongly. “This is an attack on democracy itself and on every citizen’s right to speak and be heard,” said a senior party spokesperson. The BJP has called for increased security measures for its leaders during public engagements.
The opposition parties also reacted. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) expressed concern over the safety of public representatives but urged that political discourse remain peaceful and non-violent.
