With the monsoon picking up pace, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall across Chennai and surrounding districts today. A yellow alert has been sounded for 11 key districts, signalling the potential for intense rain spells and thunderstorms.
According to meteorologists, a trough over the Bay of Bengal is driving moisture toward the Tamil Nadu coast, resulting in favourable conditions for sustained rainfall. Districts under the alert—Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai—may see sudden downpours.
Urban residents are cautioned to stay vigilant, especially near flooded areas, while parents are advised to keep track of school updates.
