In response to China’s renewed statements affirming its claim over Taiwan, Indian government sources have clarified that India’s official position remains unchanged. The country continues to acknowledge the One-China principle, recognizing Taiwan as a part of China.
This clarification follows a wave of Chinese diplomatic activity emphasizing its stance on Taiwan—an issue that has gained international attention amidst growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
Officials in New Delhi noted that India’s approach is “unchanged and well-established,” while also subtly reiterating that India expects reciprocity from China, particularly regarding India’s own territorial integrity—especially in areas like Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh, where the two countries have longstanding border disputes.
Although India does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the two sides have built strong unofficial ties, particularly in trade, education, and technology. These growing ties, however, have not translated into any shift in India’s formal recognition of the Chinese position on Taiwan.
The clarification comes at a time when major global powers are navigating sensitive regional issues ahead of key summits and multilateral dialogues. India appears committed to balancing its strategic interests by maintaining a steady foreign policy, while keeping communication open with both China and Taiwan.
