March for Australia Protest Movement Gains Momentum Across Major Cities
On August 31, 2025, thousands of Australians took to the streets in coordinated demonstrations across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, and Perth under the banner “March for Australia”. The rallies called for strict limits on immigration, with protestors citing concerns over housing shortages, infrastructure stress, and cultural identity.
Sydney Sees Largest Turnout
In Sydney, between 5,000 and 8,000 people marched from Belmore Park, coinciding with the Sydney Marathon, which had more than 35,000 runners. Counter-protests organized by refugee rights groups were held nearby, creating a tense standoff between the two sides.
Targeting Indian Migration
One of the most controversial aspects of the protest was the circulation of flyers highlighting the rapid growth of the Indian-born community in Australia. Statistics show their population doubled in just a decade, now reaching 845,800 or nearly 3% of the population. Organizers argued this migration surge outpaced historical European waves from Italy and Greece.
Clashes in Melbourne and Adelaide
In Melbourne, violent clashes erupted when anti-immigration marchers encountered pro-Palestine activists. Police used pepper spray and riot gear, arresting six individuals. In Adelaide, extremists linked to the National Socialist Network attempted to hijack the rally, resulting in further arrests.
Government Condemnation
The Albanese government condemned the rallies, labeling them divisive and hateful. Several ministers emphasized that Australia’s multiculturalism is a national strength, warning against the spread of xenophobia and extremist ideology.
