New Delhi, August 15, 2025 – Marking India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the longest Independence Day speech in Indian history, speaking for 103 minutes from the ramparts of the Red Fort. The Prime Minister used the historic occasion to unveil key national initiatives ranging from economic relief to defense modernization, employment generation, and strategic policy announcements.

New GST Reforms by Diwali

In a significant relief for the common citizen, PM Modi announced sweeping reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. These reforms, set to roll out by Diwali 2025, aim to reduce taxes on daily-use items, making essential goods more affordable and easing inflationary pressure on middle and lower-income households.

“Our goal is to simplify taxation and reduce the burden on the poor and middle class. The new GST structure will make everyday life more affordable,” said PM Modi.

Launch of Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgaar Yojana

Addressing the country’s youth and job-seekers, the Prime Minister introduced the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgaar Yojana, a new employment scheme aimed at promoting large-scale job creation in both rural and urban sectors through public-private partnerships and startup incentives.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra: Defense Modernization Push

PM Modi also unveiled Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a strategic initiative focused on enhancing India’s national security through advanced weapons systems and AI-integrated defense technologies. The project is expected to strengthen border defense and indigenous military production.

In a pointed message directed at hostile neighbors, PM Modi commended India’s armed forces for their swift and strategic execution of Operation Sindoor, calling it a model of decisive action against terrorism. He also warned against nuclear blackmail, asserting that India will respond firmly to any threats to its sovereignty.

On the eve of Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation, paying homage to freedom fighters and emphasizing India’s economic strength with a reported 6.5% GDP growth and infrastructure advancements. She reiterated the country’s focus on self-reliance through Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, and called for unity in realizing the vision of a developed India by 2047.
